Robyn Hitchcock
Sounding an almost universally whimsical note, the lyrical content on many of the tracks included on 'Queen Elvis' nevertheless occasionally rise to the level of true poetry ('The Devil's Coachman' and 'Wax Doll'), but it's the fluidity and bouyancy of the lush musical arrangements they're embedded within that make this one of Robyn Hitchcock's most important releases. No stranger to rhythmically infectious cuts, a heavily percolating bassline anchors both 'The Devil's Coachman' and 'One Long Pair of Eyes', providing an insistent background for the sensitive, plaintively-plucked , delicately-integrated, wistfully sublime chord pattern driving the acoustic guitar line weaving through the latter track, and an elastic, hyperactive one for the tightly inegrated hijinks of the former. 'Madonna Of The Wasps', the opening track, received moderately heavy airplay on MTV's more progressive programming, and is one of several tracks containing inspired, jangling guitar work from special guest Peter Buck, taking a busman's holiday from his day job in REM. A sense of uniform, seemingly universal wistfulness also pervades 'Swirling' , a nevertheless heavily-layered, gorgeously-textured track that proceeds 'One Long Pair Of Eyes'. The only real misfire on this release is 'Knife', a term I use only in a relative sense, as there is somewhat of a tremendously organic flow to the rest of 'Queen Elvis'. I picked this up on cassette in the Spring of '90, and misplaced the CD copy a couple of years ago before finding it on Amazon recently at a reasonable price. In retrospect, this is one of his most highly regarded releases and it's certainly superior to the one ('Globe Of Frogs' , which contained 'Balloon Man') that immediately preceded it . I can highly and definitely recommend it.
